Yes. Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, employers must ensure staff receive Manual Handling training if their role involves lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling loads.
Manual Handling training is required for any employee whose work involves lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling loads that could pose a risk of injury. This includes roles such as warehouse and factory staff, heavy manual labourers, healthcare workers, construction site employees, office staff handling equipment, delivery drivers, and agricultural workers.
However, manual handling training is not mandatory for all employees. According to Irish regulations, training is only required where the task involves a risk of injury, particularly to the back. For instance, someone who only lifts light items at waist height may not need training. That said, employers have a legal obligation to assess and manage manual handling risks in the workplace. Over one-third of all workplace injuries reported to the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) are caused by manual handling, making it a leading cause of work-related disability.
Yes, many employers — especially in construction, warehousing, or healthcare — will require a valid Manual Handling certificate before you start work.
